Sometimes the best way to repair cracked asphalt is through replacement cut-outs and patchwork. This process begins by replacing the empty area of asphalt with fresh gravel to use as a base, and then a layer of hot asphalt is applied. The asphalt is raked until it is smooth. A machine tamp or roller is then used to compact down the gravel and asphalt until it is smoothed out to the level of the pavement around it.
